Huntress Command Center

All Your Security in One Place

Problem

Huntress' product offerings have begun to outgrow the platform. While EDR (endpoint detection and response) remains Huntress' flagship product, the EDR dashboard was not a suitable homepage for our users who subscribed to multiple products.

Solution

We needed to bring everything together into a single pane of glass. So we created, designed, built, and launched a new dashboard experience that did exactly that and more.

Goals

  • Show users “What has Huntress done for me lately?”

  • Display data that is both meaningful and actionable for users.

  • Create a scalable design to accommodate the continuous growth of Huntress.

My Role

In my role within this project, I served as a key designer on the design team, taking on a variety of responsibilities.

  • User Research Lead: Understanding user needs and preferences, and ensuring our design decisions were informed by valuable insights.

  • Hands-on contributor: Heavily contributed to the design work, translating concepts into visually compelling and user-friendly interfaces.

  • Cross-Functional Collaborator: Working closely with engineers and product management, to ensure a seamless alignment between design and implementation.

Pie-in-the-sky Concepts

The initial phase of crafting the multi-product dashboard began with expansive, pie-in-the-sky concepts, unconstrained by limitations, envisioning the ideal features and functionalities. To bring these concepts to life, we strategically selected the most compelling elements from each. However, the transition from concept to reality required navigating the limitations inherent in our existing platform, including design systems and tech stacks. We worked through these limitations to craft initial concepts that we could later fine-tune before diving into AB testing.

User Research & Testing

Taking the lead in multiple rounds of user research and testing was essential to our project's success. Engaging with users across diverse roles, from CEOs and administrators to SOC analysts, MSPs, security engineers, solution architects, and technicians, was a deliberate effort to gather comprehensive insights. The goal was to ensure that the information presented in the platform was precisely what users needed, aligning with their workflows seamlessly.

Round 1

  • Appreciation for clean design and color use.

  • Clear hierarchy for actionable data.

  • Like for new widgets: Assisted Remediations, MFA, Account Feed, and Escalations.

  • Desire for more customization options and missing information.

  • SAT call-out unpopular unless subscribed.

  • Recommendations: add missing information, explore show/hide widget options for enhanced customization.

Round 2

Based on the feedback gathered from round 1, we iterated once more and arrived at a design that closely aligned with our launch vision. Now, the focus shifted towards user validation. We hand-selected users from the previous round who provided valuable insights to engage with in this subsequent round of validation.

Results

  • Participants appreciate the well-organized, hierarchical structure of the Command Center.

  • Command Center focuses on action items, preferring direct remediation steps in Triage Feed.

  • Users desire customization for distinct roles.

  • Command Center useful for client presentations highlighting progress and SOC operations.

With an average satisfaction score of 4.6 out of 5, we are ready to ship!

Goal Orientated Features

What Has Huntress Done for Me Lately?

The Security Operations Center Actions section on the platform homepage displays a comprehensive list of events that our SOC team investigates in order to provide a short list of reported incidents to be concerned about.

Take Action

The Triage Feed, from the Command Center, puts your to-do list right at your fingertips.

Growth Mindset

The widgets keep track of all of the subscriptions a user may have, as well as the features that users have told us are most important to them about each product. This section is designed with growth in mind, with a modular layout that can grow with Huntress and its users.
